Internal Family Systems Therapy
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is a powerful counselling approach that works with and heals your inner "parts", often through guided imagery exercises. It can help in a way that goes beyond just talking about your problems in a more detached, analytical manner.
I'm trained in this model, have been using it with clients for over five years, and continually work to improve my skills and knowledge of it. I've experienced how helpful it can be in my own life.
I use IFS when it feels like it will be a good fit - sometimes a more action-oriented, practical approach makes more sense. It can be really effective for people who:
- Want to explore themselves more deeply
- Find they keep running into blocks when they try to make hands-on changes
- Want to understand themselves better, especially why they keep behaving in ways that don't seem to be helping them
- Would like to develop more compassion for themselves
- Are stuck in internal conflicts, and haven't gotten very far by trying to logically make a decision or force themselves to act
- Feel like they've hit a limit on how much they can improve through other therapy and self-help methods, and want to try something new
Internal Family Systems is a type of therapy people often have to experience firsthand to fully understand. If you just read or hear about it can sound a bit odd or even silly, but when you do it yourself you can quickly get a sense of how helpful it can be, and how different it can feel compared to doing counselling in the usual style.
